Welcome to Mama Ru’s. We are Ken and Joann from Sitka, a small island in southeast Alaska.

Our island is a world away from the Cook Islands, but as we get older, we realized that winters were getting too hard, and we were going to need to find a warmer place.

One trip at a time, we started exploring tropical places, and Rarotonga was the first one that felt like home—not like our old home necessarily—but like a new home. Maybe in some ways it was the same, with a small population and lots of boating and seafood, but with no chance of freezing to death, and here we are outnumbered by coral heads instead of bears!

Seriously, though, we fell in love. Originally, we wanted to explore more. I’ve been to Hawaii and the Caribbean, and once I got to the Cook Islands I wasn’t going any farther. It’s so sweet—beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing. And yes, it is warm.

Ken will tell you that there are thousands of hot sunny beaches all over the world, but it’s hard to find one where the people are as nice as Rarotonga.

Mama Ru’s is a two-bach property on the beach in Vaimaanga. Once we stayed a few times we jumped on the opportunity to buy the property, and now as new owners we want to share it with you as a vacation rental. Fall in love like we did. Welcome to Mama Ru’s.
